Cover Crop Testing

Test Overview

Duration: 7-12 Days

The Iowa State University Seed Laboratory provides testing for cover crop seed intended for a producer's own use, participation in NRCS programs, or sale to others. Rye is the most commonly tested cover crop, although testing is available for oats, wheat, barley, and other species.

Which Tests Do I Need?

For seed being sold to others:

  • Standard Germination
  • Purity Analysis
  • Noxious Weed Seed Examination

For NRCS programs:

  • Standard Germination
  • Purity Analysis

For your own use:

  • Standard Germination

Testing requirements may vary depending on the program, destination, or intended use of the seed. Contact Customer Care if you are unsure which tests are needed.

Freshly Harvested Seed

Please indicate if your seed is freshly harvested.

Freshly harvested cereal seed may be dormant. A prechill treatment may be used before germination testing to help overcome dormancy and provide a more accurate assessment of the seed's germination potential. Prechill treatment adds approximately five days to the testing period.

Sample Requirements

For rye, wheat, and barley, please submit approximately 2 pounds (1,000 grams) of seed.

Because oats are lighter and bulkier, approximately 2 pounds (1,000 grams) will require a larger container.

Additional seed may be required if other testing is requested.

Collecting Your Sample

The sample submitted to the laboratory should be representative of the entire seed lot. Collect seed from several locations and depths throughout the lot and combine these portions thoroughly before removing the sample that will be sent to the laboratory.

A seed trier is preferred when available. If one is not available, collect handfuls from multiple locations throughout the lot.
